Southfield 50th Information

City of Southfield, Michigan USA
50th Anniversary: April 28, 1958 - 2008

On April 28, 1958 the City of Southfield was incorporated as a city following a favorable incorporation vote and approval of a City Charter by local voters. Before that time, Southfield was largely an undeveloped township of approximately 15,000 residents. Today, Southfield has grown to be the premier business address in Michigan – a modern city of quaint neighborhoods and golden skyscrapers, with a residential population of almost 80,000. Southfield’s more than 26 million square feet of office space also make it home to a daytime population of more than 175,000.

In the past 50 years, Southfield has grown from a rural farming community to one of the leading business centers in Michigan and the Midwest. Few other metropolitan areas can boast such a beautiful skyline, replete with magnificent skyscrapers and high rises located just minutes away from quaint, tree-lined neighborhoods. Over the years, Southfield has truly developed from a rural township into a world class city since its incorporation in 1958. On April 28, 2008, the City of Southfield will celebrate its 50th anniversary of incorporation as a city. To commemorate this historic occasion, the City is planning to sponsor several exciting events and programs throughout 2008.

Southfield is pulling out all the stops to celebrate our golden jubilee. From the Southfield's Got Talent competition to the commemorative Liberty Elm tree program, there is truly something for everyone.
