City of Southfield waives garage sale permit fees August 5-11 for National Garage Sale Day

Due to the inclement weather this week, the City of Southfield will continue to waive garage sale permit fees until August 14, 2024 in recognition of National Garage Sale Day on August 10, 2024.

Under Southfield City Code, a permit from the City Clerk’s Office is normally required before residents can hold garage sales. Permits and permit fees will be waived for the seven-day event and registration at city hall is not required. Residents can make or purchase their own signs; however, placement can only be on private property and not in public rights-of-way. Permitted garage sale hours of operation will remain the same from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Participation will also not be counted against the limited number of garage sales that residents are permitted to hold annually.

“This is an opportunity for our residents to celebrate in the summer tradition of good, old fashioned garage sales without the typical added expense of fees and registration,” commented City Clerk Janet Jackson. “We hope that entire neighborhoods come together with block sales and other related community activities as we clean out the closets and shop for those great bargains citywide!”

Homeowner and Condo Associations as well as individual residents that would like to promote their respective sales may e-mail communityrelations@cityofsouthfield.com with their particular dates, times, sale items and address(es) for inclusion on the City of Southfield website. All submissions must be received by noon on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 to be eligible for inclusion; however, this is not required to participate. There is no word count maximum and no photos will be accepted or included.

Southfield began recognizing National Garage Sale Day annually beginning in 2021 by waiving garage sale registration requirements and fees during the week of National Garage Sale Day, recognized as the second Saturday in August. Garage sales are good for the environment because they encourage the repurposing of unwanted items. Garage sales also promote a sense of community as residents get to know their neighbors. Additionally, garage sales help residents reduce clutter while making a little extra cash.
