About Chris Staples
Blessed with an unbelievable forty-four inch vertical leap, Chris Staples (aka Everybody Hates Chris) took a nontraditional path to the becoming a world class dunker. From former football standout to highly sought-out show dunker, Staples was originally recruited to play football at Wayne State University and Eastern Michigan University.
Cousin of former Pittsburgh Steeler and NFL veteran Lamarr Woodley, Staples decided to put football behind him and began working at a rehabilitation center in Detroit. Staples was working out every day with hopes of playing organized basketball. While recording some of his high flying dunks on a low quality camera phone, someone suggested he reach out to the Harlem Globetrotters.
Completely unaware of who the Globetrotters were, the 6’3” combo guard took a shot and sent videos of him dunking at the local gym, to Harlem Globetrotters and landed a tryout in November 2012. In December of 2012, Staples would begin his journey as a professional show basketball player for the world famous Harlem Globetrotters. After the first tour, Staples told his tour manager to book his return flight to Los Angeles, not Detroit for the off season. Chris figured he’d make the most of his professional show basketball player platform by going to Hollywood. “I figured I’d stay there until I had to return to the Harlem Globetrotters for the next season or went broke, if it didn’t work out, I could always go home.” Needless to say, Chris Staples still resides in Los Angeles!
Since joining the world famous Harlem Globetrotters in 2012, Staples has performed his famous high-wire act in over 50 countries, has become a YouTube sensation with his arsenal of viral dunking videos and has arguably become one of the most recognizable dunkers in the world.
As Chris’s unmatched athleticism became increasingly popular, brands such as McDonald’s, Victoza, Dockers and Jordan have featured Chris in national commercials. Adding to his acting resume, Chris landed the leading role in the 2017 film Slamma Jamma set to release on March 24th in over 500 theaters nationally. In the film, Chris plays the role of Michael Diggs, wrongfully accused and sent to prison, a former basketball star prepares for the national slam dunk competition finding redemption in himself and in those he loves.
From athlete to entertainer, the 30 year old Detroit native shows no signs of slowing down.
