The Friends of the Southfield Public Library will host A holiday Jazz On The Road benefit concert tonight from 5-7 p.m. at Nicolas BBQ Restaurant, 25225 Telegraph Road featuring Dreams Deferred. Enjoy a special treat of joyful laughs with special guest, comedian Angela Verges! Get into the holiday spirit with a live performance. Enjoy festive tunes, old school music and great food.
Dynamic, versatile, entertaining, and professional are just a few words that describe the Dreams Deferred Band, an eight-piece ensemble that has been capturing audiences since 1996. Based in Motown, this eclectic band embodies the true Motown sound, featuring Jerry Brooks on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Kim Reba as lead vocalist, James Francis on vocals and bass guitar, Labarry Lumumba Gordon on percussion and vocals, Ronnie Anderson on drums, Bill Malone on vocals and keyboard, and Devon as an occasional attraction saxophonist. Their sound reflects the influences of legendary musicians and music from Motown, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Memphis. The band's musical style spans a variety of genres, including R&B, classics, modern hits, blues, the Motown sound, hip hop, and some country.
Angela Verges, born in Detroit, Michigan, is a seasoned humorist and writer, bringing laughter and inspiration through her unique comedic style. Verges channels her vibrant life experiences into her performances and writings. She is known for her humorous take on life and creative sense of humor. Sheila Thomas, Editor and Publisher of Prayer and Praise Magazine, lauds Angie’s book "Menopause Ain't No Joke" for its lighthearted yet uplifting approach, stating it stands out among many devotionals and Christian books. Whether through her books for children, her blog on parenting, or her stand-up comedy, Verges’ work resonates with audiences, blending wit, wisdom, and heartfelt storytelling. Outside of comedy, Verges works as the Senior Coordinator for the City of Southfield and is a mother of two teenage boys.
