The city of Southfield’s Parks and Recreation Department will host an eight-week, city-wide Geocaching Scavenger Hunt beginning Monday, October 9 through Saturday, December 2.
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", at specific locations marked by coordinates. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and a pen or pencil. The caches come in different sizes, shapes and difficulty levels. The geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name, in order to prove that they found it. After signing the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where it was found.
A free introductory class is scheduled for Friday, October 6 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in room 112 of the Parks & Recreation Building, 26000 Evergreen Road. The scavenger and geocache hunt costs $25 per team and includes a Parks & Recreation cinch sack (one per team member) and eight weeks of scavenger hunting. Teams can consist of one to four members.
The scavenger and geocache hunt will feature a new clue released online every Monday from October 9 through November 27. Once a team member finds the cache, they will sign-in on the enclosed log and return the cache to its hiding spot. Each signature on the log receives one entry into the prize drawing. Teams can join the hunt through November 27. The hunt will officially end on Saturday, December 2. The grand prize is a TV donated by Medilodge of Southfield.
