The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force will sponsor Nonviolence365® youth workshop on Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Lawrence Technological University, 21000 Ten Mile Road.

The Southfield MLK Task Force has partnered with The King Center of Atlanta, Georgia to present Nonviolence365®, which is based upon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s nonviolent philosophy and methodology. This one-day training provides insight into Dr. King’s ‘Pilgrimage to Nonviolence’ as well as interactive sessions on his Six Principles of Nonviolence and Six Steps of Nonviolence. It is a critical step in understanding how nonviolence, as espoused by Dr. King, Jr. and King Center founder, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, can prepare people across the globe to embrace nonviolence as a lifestyle and as a vehicle for social change.

Participants of this workshop will:
• Learn skills to de-escalate inter and intra conflicts;
• Examine the major types and levels of conflict and their characteristics in relationship to community conflicts;
• Develop core non-violence values for future leaders;
• Incorporate the Kingian philosophy on nonviolence as an additional tool in conflict management; and
• Examine how Cyberbullying contributes to school violence.

The city of Southfield was the first city in the state of Michigan to hold a Dr. King peace walk or march. The first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Walk in Southfield took place on January 20, 1986, commemorating the first national observance of Dr. King’s birthday. The 2020 MLK Peace Walk will take place on Monday, January 20 beginning at Hope United Methodist Church at 9:30 a.m., followed by a program at the Southfield Pavilion at 11 a.m.
