The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force will sponsor Preventing Violence in our Schools & Introduction to Six Principles of Kingian Nonviolence on Saturday, November 3 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Lawrence Technological University in Room T410, 21000 Ten Mile Road.

Topics will include an overview of: the civil rights movement, freedom riders, voting rights, human rights, gun violence in schools, armed teachers, background checks and the Six Principles of Kingian Non-Violence.

The workshop is open to middle and high school students in Oakland, Wayne or Macomb counties as part of the MLK Task Force’s Youth Leadership Program. It is sponsored in part by a grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan as well as space provided by Lawrence Technological University.

The city of Southfield was the first city in the state of Michigan to hold a Dr. King peace walk or march. The first Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Walk in Southfield took place on January 20, 1986, commemorating the first national observance of Dr. King’s birthday. The 2019 MLK Peace Walk will take place on Monday, January 21 beginning at Hope United Methodist Church at 9:30 a.m., followed by a program at the Southfield Pavilion at 11 a.m.
