The city of Southfield’s water and sewer rates for the 2018-19 fiscal year will increase as a result of capital improvement projects and increased rates from Southfield’s water and sewer providers. The city’s fiscal year runs from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019.

Water and sewer rates did not increase in the city of Southfield from the 2016-17 fiscal year through 2018. Rates for the 2018-19 fiscal year saw an increase due to higher wholesale prices from Southfield’s water and sewer providers as well as infrastructure improvements to the city’s water and sewer system. Southfield has over $8.5 million in capital improvement projects planned for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

Water is billed in 100 cubic feet increments that splits the capital portion between water and sewer. Residents will see a new rate of $4.80 per unit of water (previously $4.13 per unit) and $6.88 per unit of sewage (previously $5.94).

Currently, the city of Southfield is ranked ninth out of ten communities based on water consumption of 4,000 cubic feet served through a 5/8-inch meter in both ‘total costs’ and ‘costs of water.’ Communities surveyed include Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Lathrup Village, Clawson, Pleasant Ridge, Birmingham, Beverly Hills, Berkley and Bingham Farms. Due to the installation of a new sewer system in 2016, Southfield ranks fourth out of ten communities for sewage disposal.
