Southfield residents are reminded to use caution and good judgement while celebrating the Independence Day holiday this Fourth of July. Please observe all local, state and federal laws relative to the use of consumer fireworks. The recent high temperatures and dry conditions have created a dangerous environment for the discharge of fireworks. Residents are urged to use extreme caution when using fireworks and to be considerate of their neighbors, especially seniors, those with pets or veterans who may be suffering from PTSD. 

By city ordinance, the use of consumer fireworks is only allowed in Southfield during the hours of 8 a.m. until 12 midnight on the day preceding, the day of, and the day following a national holiday. Use of fireworks is prohibited by minors and in all public places, including parks, at all times. All violations will be subject to seizure and a municipal civil infraction with civil fines and penalties as provided in Section 9.606 of Chapter 125A of the City Code, not to exceed $500 for each violation.

Residents are also reminded that there will be no rubbish or recycling collection on Independence Day and collection will be delayed one day all week thereafter. City offices and the library will be closed.
