Southfield Celebrates Black History Month

Southfield Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the 2021 lineup for ‘Southfield Celebrates Black History Month’. This month-long celebration to remember the contributions and celebrate the history of African-Americans has evolved to include virtual as well as individual and outdoor programs.
The Walk Through History display will feature informational signs describing some well-known and lesser known influential African Americans throughout Southfield and world history. Walk Through History will be on display along the walking path on the front lawn of the Donald F. Fracassi Municipal Campus located at 26000 Evergreen Road from February 1 – March 1.
Black History Month Activity Bags will contain activity sheets, stickers, themed coloring sheets by Naturally ILLustrated, crayons, a bracelet craft and more. Bags can be purchased for $5 each (while supplies last) by calling (248) 796-4620 or going online to https://bit.ly/2MCT6Td. Black History Month Activity Bags are sponsored by National Heritage Academies.
A Black History Month Lunch and Lecture will be held on Wednesday, February 17 and feature former Southfield City Councilperson Barbara Tally, the first African American elected to public office in Southfield, as she presents a virtual lecture at 1 p.m. entitled “Black History to Inspire Us.” The lecture is free and will be presented via the Webex platform; however, participants must register in advance to receive the meeting link information prior to the program. For those looking to enjoy lunch during the lecture, a special Black History Month Drive-thru Lunch from Beans & Cornbread, will be available for $20 for Southfield residents and $25 for non-residents. Each lunch, delivered in their commemorative Shoebox Lunch box, will include baked or fried chicken along with cornbread, sweet potato and greens plus water and sweet treats. Lunches will be ready at 12 p.m. for pick up at the Parks & Recreation Building circle drive on 26000 Evergreen Road. Customers will remain in their vehicle as staff hand out ordered lunches with the meeting link information for Ms. Talley’s lecture at 1 p.m. Lunches must be registered by Friday, February 5 online at https://bit.ly/3acQBzh or by calling the Parks & Recreation Information Desk at (248) 796-4620.
