City of Southfield Fireworks Ordinance & Safety Reminder
July 3, 2024
Southfield residents are reminded to use caution and good judgement while celebrating Independence Day. Please observe all local, state and federal laws relative to the use of consumer fireworks. This season's relatively low rainfall and dry conditions have created a dangerous environment for the discharge of fireworks. Residents are urged to use extreme caution when using fireworks and to be considerate of their neighbors, especially seniors, those with pets or veterans who may be suffering from PTSD.
By city ordinance (which complies with the State), the use of consumer fireworks is only allowed in Southfield from June 29 – July 4, 2024 during the hours of 11 a.m. until 11:45 p.m.
Additional firework requirements include:
- In Michigan, consumer fireworks must meet Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards. Licensed facilities will only sell fireworks to people 18 years of age or older.
- Use of fireworks is prohibited by minors (anyone under the age of 18) as well as persons under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
- State law requires that consumer-grade fireworks can only be ignited from personal property.
- It is illegal to ignite fireworks on all public property at all times (including streets and sidewalks), parks, school property, church property, or another person’s property without their express permission.
When fire-related incidents involve consumer, low impact, or illegal fireworks resulting in property damage, injury or death of another person, individuals are subject to a misdemeanor or felony punishable by imprisonment of not more than five years and fines of up to $10,000 or both.
All violations will be subject to seizure and a municipal civil infraction with civil fines and penalties as provided in Chapter 125A of the City Code. Violation of Section 9.603 shall constitute a municipal civil infraction subject to a fine of one thousand dollars ($1,000.00). Of that fine, five hundred dollars ($500.00) must be remitted to the city police department. Unless expressly provided otherwise, all violations of any other section of Chapter 125A shall subject the violator to the civil fines and penalties as provided in section 1.703 of chapter 15 of the City Code, not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500.00) for each violation.
This ordinance was passed by City Council in accordance with the City’s continued efforts to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Southfield. The full ordinance can be read by clicking on the link below.
Residents are also reminded that there will be no rubbish or recycling collection on Independence Day and collection will be delayed one day all week thereafter. City offices and the library will be closed.
Please celebrate Independence Day responsibly and do your part to ensure the safety of yourself, your family, your neighbors and property.
