The city of Southfield Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate the completion of renovations at several city parks with a rescheduled Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Miller Park on October 26 at 3 p.m. The original event was rescheduled from October 5 due to inclement weather.
The ceremony will feature remarks from several city officials including Mayor Kenson Siver, City Administrator Fred Zorn and Parks & Recreation Director Terry Fields. Light refreshments will be served, and the event is open to the public.
The Southfield Parks & Recreation Department has recently completed several park improvement projects over the past nine months with an investment of over $2.5 million in five different parks throughout the city this year.
Renovations began over the winter with new playground equipment installed at Civic Center Park, Freeway Park and Bedford Woods Park. These three parks represent the first stage in the Parks & Recreation Department’s plan to replace all 12 playgrounds throughout the city.
Two major projects involved improvements to both Simms and Miller parks. Both parks received new paved walking paths as well as the addition of basketball courts. Simms Park features two half-courts for basketball as well as a tennis court that includes playing lines for Pickleball. At Miller Park, the old tennis courts were renovated into four new pickleball courts and three basketball half courts with the ability to play a full court game.
In addition to the new play equipment at Civic Center Park, the seven tennis courts were resurfaced and painted beginning in late spring. Repairs and updates were made to the lights that cover four of the courts at the complex as well. Pickleball lines were added to court #7 to allow for dual play. Pickleball lines were also added to the three tennis courts at Beech Woods Park in August. There are now nine courts located throughout the city of Southfield for Pickleball players to use.
